It was the Little Engine That Could against the Big Kahuna that couldn't.

In what will go down as one of the more controversial Academy votes for best picture, Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" ran roughshod over James Cameron's "Avatar" on Sunday night in a race that initially was thought of as a cakewalk for the 3D extravaganza.

Talk about a money gap: Since its release in June, Bigelow's taut Iraq War drama has mustered a measly $14.7 million at the domestic wickets, while her ex-husband's years-in-the-making epic has in three months grossed $721 million stateside and a whopping $2.6 billion worldwide. Only his other tour de force, "Titanic," comes close, with a $1.8 billion worldwide haul.

On the budget side, too, the discrepancy was huge, hers costing $15 million and his $300 million or thereabouts.

So what happened?

A lot of folks were asking that in the wake of Tom Hanks' bolt to the stage to blurt out the final winner at the end of the overlong, 31⁄2-hour awards show. The audience hardly had time to gasp before being herded to the exits. Not since -- take your pick -- "Shakespeare in Love" outshone "Saving Private Ryan," "Gandhi" edged "E.T." or "Crash" beat "Brokeback Mountain" has there been such an eyebrow-raising finale.

OK, "Hurt Locker" did have the momentum going into the final lap of awards season, especially after its recent Producers Guild triumph, but still ...

No doubt there will be a lot of theories -- conspiratorial and not -- bandied about, even though we arguably never will know what precise mixture of factors contributed and in what percentages.

But some explanations can be hazarded.

After so many Iraq War dramas that have failed to hit their marks at the boxoffice or strike an emotional chord with the public, this one seemed to hit a nerve, achieving the right thematic balance between the horrors of a conflict that just won't go away and sympathy for those who have to take part in it. This story of a wounded, addictive psyche might well do for our time and for our collective mood what, say, "Platoon" did for the Vietnam War -- the irony being that so few actually have seen "Locker."

Even so, its messages were clear and clearly portrayed, and distributor Summit did an excellent job in mounting an awards campaign that appealed to Academy voters across the various industry categories.

Then there's that preferential voting system, which likely skewed the outcome toward the indie pic. "Avatar" might have garnered more first-place ballots than any other contender, but probably just as likely it appeared way down on the ballots of other voters who didn't wish to see it win. "Locker" probably was high on most everyone's list, benefiting when the second- and third-place entries were scooped up and re-assigned.

Also playing a role in the selection might have been a predilection for the perceived underdog -- and a charming, talented, articulate woman at that -- over the self-styled king of the world who no doubt rubbed some Academy members the wrong way the last time he was onstage brandishing the Oscar.

The very idea that a female helmer made the kind of movie heretofore the exclusive reserve and prerogative of male directors also might have been too tantalizing to resist. More appealing was that a little pic with a difficult story managed the feat of amassing enough dough to shoot under adverse conditions in the Middle East while Fox for years was signing the checks for a helmer hunkered down in a high-tech hangar in West Los Angeles. Bigelow's crew faced suspicious crowds, curfews and fusillades; Cameron's crew faced a bunch of computers.

More awards coverage
In short, "Avatar" simply might have been too complicated a phenom to get one's arms around and the money it's thrown off too unseemly -- or so it would seem from how Fox variously waged its awards campaign.

First, it was all about 3D, which while an amazing advance technologically -- even Spielberg made a point of publicly praising Cameron's achievement in raising the bar for filmmakers -- never resonated widely as an emotional message.

Secondly, Cameron and company began arguing for the actors in the movie to be considered for their performances in the same category and league with traditional thespians. Many no doubt felt that computer-generated or enhanced or re-created performances are different in kind from their own -- or even a threat to their profession. As the largest voting bloc among Academy members, they might have tilted away from this Pandora's box.

Thirdly, the accent of the campaign began to tilt most recently toward the environmental themes of the film, but that approach came too late to be effective. There was also a sizable critical contingent that felt the plot lines were simplistic, fuzzy or even anti-American. "Just a more tricked-out take on 'Pocahontas' or 'Dances With Wolves,' " these detractors argued dismissively.

In the end, and despite opening the competition to 10 contenders, the Academy's decision might have come down to that reflex preference for art over commerce or to its sense of purpose in rewarding art in an increasingly corporate, commercially driven film industry. Indie pics, they might have reasoned, are an increasingly endangered species, while mainstream, studio pics have been extraordinarily counter-recessionary.

Whatever we might think of the result, the indie biz can be encouraged by the Academy's nod, and Fox still will laugh all the way to the bank.

Detroit's Rodney Stuckey was conscious and breathing on his own as he was taken to a hospital after collapsing on the Pistons' bench during a game Friday night.

The Pistons said Stuckey was taken to the Cleveland Clinic and his vital signs were stable, but was going for further testing and observation.

Stuckey was wheeled off the court on a stretcher during the third quarter after he collapsed into a trainer's arms on the bench during the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Stuckey walked off the floor for a timeout showing no signs of illness. After a few moments in a chair, though, Stuckey slumped over.

Medical personnel rushed over to the Pistons' bench with a stretcher. Play was halted for 12 minutes as the medical staff worked on Stuckey, placed an oxygen mask on his face and wheeled him into an ambulance.

Cleveland players huddled together with their heads bowed, while Pistons teammate Tayshaun Prince sat silent in his chair a few feet away as Stuckey was being treated.

'American Idol' Ladies Night: Crystal Bowersox Makes Triumphant Return

"American Idol" needed a shakeup, and on Wednesday night (March 3), Crystal Bowersox provided just the kick season nine has been missing. The Ohio native spent Tuesday night in the hospital, forcing a last-minute switch that had the guys performing a night early.

Though we didn't find out what led to Bowersox's hospitalization, host Ryan Seacrest addressed the issue right off the bat on Wednesday's show, asking the dreadlocked singer how she was feeling just hours after it was revealed on his radio show that she would be sent home if she couldn't perform. "I feel good," she said, looking more glammed up in a purple top draped with a fishnet peekaboo sweater and big silver earrings. "I'm a tough cookie. ... Let's do this."
Luckily for her, she was first up, revealing to America that she has a kind of "square" twin brother, Carl, and that she carries around a butterfly-bedecked trinket bag. After some harsh comments for her Alanis Morissette cover last week, Bowersox went with Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Long as I Can See the Light," slapping a gospel spin on the classic-rock tune.
Showing no signs of illness, she took it to church, coming off like an indie-rock Janis Joplin over a Hammond organ and her gently strummed acoustic guitar. Whatever was ailing her didn't show onstage, as Bowersox powerfully nailed the vocals, looking confident and strong.
Simon praised her for not playing the sympathy card, admitting in a George Bush-ian way that he "misunderestimated" her talents based on last week, calling her vocal "incredible" and comparing the performance to the first time the panel realized they had a star on their hands with Kelly Clarkson. "You are the truth. You do what you do," Randy Jackson told her, praising Bowersox for keeping it real. Ellen DeGeneres called her gift "pure, raw, natural talent" and Kara DioGuardi said the Americana rock vibe was the right one for her and it took her to new heights on the show.
Country wannabe Haeley Vaughn had some ground to make up after last week's Beatles stumble, and the 16-year-old headband artist tried to do it with Miley Cyrus' "The Climb," slipping into a more comfortable groove with the country ballad. The vocals were still a bit shaky at points and her lisp was sometimes distracting, prompting Randy to deem it a pitchy disaster and say that he felt she had no connection to the song by a fellow teen. Kara added that the 16-year-old could use another year of working on her voice, and Simon said it was just a "complete and utter mess. ... There's a certain irony about you singing a song about climbing when you actually fell off."
Antique refurbisher Lacey Brown, 24, got buried by Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" last week, so she went with Kara's advice and sang Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me." Unfortunately for her, while the song was more in her wheelhouse, the vocals were mostly uneven, and Randy said it was the right song choice but sounded like a karaoke performance with nothing added to it. Cowell called it "marginally better" than last week, faulting her for not being memorable enough.
Another singer who needed some redemption was Katie Stevens, 17, who revealed she can say "give me a kiss" in six languages but who got the kiss-off last week with a musty Michael Bublé cover. This time, she chose Corinne Bailey Rae's "Put Your Records On," doing an admirable, if somewhat forgettable, cover in which her vocals went from chesty growl to thin falsetto.
Ellen praised her voice but said it still felt a bit old. "I don't want to hear something I would hear in my dentist's office," DeGeneres told her. For Kara and Randy, the vocals needed to be more controlled and focused, but Simon was brutally honest, saying she needed more experience and had to figure out what kind of recording artist she wants to be.
Former middle school mascot-turned-cheerleader Didi Benami took a turn from her singer/songwriter soft spot to a soul space with Bill Withers' classic "Lean on Me," which she tried to imbue with some gospel grit courtesy of wild gesticulation, foot stomping and high, reedy notes.
It was no good for Randy, who felt it pointed out her imperfections rather than highlighting her strengths, and while Ellen loves her voice, presence and smile, it was not the right Withers choice in her mind. "It wasn't good, it really wasn't good," said Kara, who urged her to stay in the singer/songwriter lane and go for consistency.
Another singer who needed to prove something, children's choir director Michelle Delamor, tried to break out of her R&B cage with Creed's "With Arms Wide Open." She turned the turgid rock song into a breathy soul ballad that felt and sounded like a big gamble, thanks to a fistful of bum notes.
Randy loved her cute outfit and felt she had a great opportunity to switch it up but didn't do enough with the tune. Ellen thought it almost worked, forgetting for a minute that it was a rock song, while Kara said it was her favorite Delamor performance so far and that it was a risk that didn't always work vocally but was believable. Cowell agreed with Kara, giving her props for choosing an unusual song and doing her best to make it her own.
One of the singers who needed to work on her stagecraft was multi-instrumentalist Lilly Scott, who got props for her indie Beatles cover last week. So she tried it again, strapping on a 12-string guitar for Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come." Her unique, quavering voice gave the song a modern edge and her folky redo showed some strong artistic chops.
What Randy loves about Scott is her individuality, and he liked how she nailed a very tough song. "I don't know what 'it' is, but you've got 'it,' " Ellen said. Kara agreed that it was the best performance of the night and that Scott had her moment. "You are gonna change the game," she promised, heaping praise for not trying to fit into a cookie-cutter style.
Rocking some giant doorknocker earrings and a sedate updo, Katelyn Epperly, who has aspirations of opening her own recording studio someday, went music geek with a solo piano version of Coldplay's "The Scientist." Transforming it into a jazzy torch song, Epperly made the tune her own, imbuing it with stirring emotion as she stared sad-eyed into the camera.
"I kind of love you," DioGuardi said. "You have an incredible instrument and you can do a lot of things with it, and that's your biggest problem." She counseled Epperly to stop jumping around from style to style each week and focus on figuring out who she is. Cowell called it a smart, contemporary song choice and advised her to be less corny. Ellen had her first Paula moment, praising Epperly's guitar work before correcting herself and saying the arrangement was just too snoozy and slow.
Paige Miles, 24, an avid crayon enthusiast who Simon said has the best voice of all the girls, curried some more favor with the judges by singing Kelly Clarkson's "Walk Away," a song co-written by Kara. The staccato R&B take on the tune highlighted Miles' scratchy, seductive vocals and strong, soulful howl.
Ellen loved how Miles changed it up and had fun with the song, even if it was just OK for Randy, who felt the landslide of words didn't allow Miles to show off her vocals enough. Though she liked the version, Kara said Miles' cheerful, smiling take didn't really fit the intent of the lyric that should have been a bit more angsty. "I think you're getting lost in these songs ... it's like the songs are overtaking you," Cowell said, suggesting she was picking the wrong tunes and needs to find one that will mark her as the one to beat.
The primo final spot belonged to former mohawked rocker Siobhan Magnus, 19, who ripped off a big chunk of danger with Aretha Franklin's "Think." Magnus proved she had the pipes to float the big soul classic, even if her stage presence was a bit odd at times and her gigantic power wail near song's end was startling.
"You are so bold and so fearless," Randy said, howling about her unhinged bravery. "It was dope!" Ellen couldn't have agreed more, and Kara was still smiling about the gigantic note, which Magnus said she learned how to hit while singing Clarkson songs in the shower. "You are such a strange person," Simon said as a compliment. "I thought there were parts of that song which were terrible, but that note was incredible."
After another rough week of highs and lows, two men and two women will go home on Thursday night.

One pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small, and the pills Tim Burton gives you don't do very much at all.

With apologies to Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," that more or less sums up "Alice in Wonderland," the director's middling new version of the Lewis Carroll tale. It has its successful moments but it's surprisingly inert overall, more like a Burton derivative than something he actually did himself.

Through no fault of its own, "Alice" also has the misfortune of being the first major 3-D release to come out after the "Avatar" revolution, and when you add in that Burton chose to shoot in 2-D and have the footage converted, it inevitably plays like one of the last gasps of the old-fashioned ways of doing things.

Especially old-school is the framing device devised by veteran Disney animation screenwriter Linda Woolverton ("Beauty and the Beast," "The Lion King"). In this version, Alice is introduced as a 6-year-old girl troubled by visions of falling down a hole and "seeing all these creatures," episodes her kindly dad assures her are nothing but dreams.

Then it's 13 years later and Alice is a pouty young woman (Australian actress Mia Wasikowska) headed for a posh garden party with her mother. Alice is a bit of a rebel (she doesn't wear a corset!) and though she doesn't know it, she's on the way to what her family hopes will be her engagement party.

But once we meet Alice's intended, a complete twit named Hamish, we know that marriage is not going to happen, and a good thing too, for this part of the film is so tedious we are all but begging for the escape the rabbit hole provides, especially because it serves as a portal to Burton's inventive mind.

Alice is soon desperate to flee as well and, following the traditional white rabbit (voiced by Michael Sheen), she hurtles down the hole and confronts a world of wonders where animals talk and even flowers speak their minds.

Given the strength of Burton's imagination, it's not surprising that many of these creatures are engaging, especially if, like that rabbit, they are voiced by top British actors.

The unsettling Cheshire Cat ( Stephen Fry) is hard to forget, as are Absolem the Blue Caterpillar ( Alan Rickman), Bayard the Bloodhound (Timothy Spall) and fright legend Christopher Lee as the dread Jabberwocky.

Rather less satisfying is the script's notion that the creatures spend much of their time bickering as to whether this Alice is the same person who came down the rabbit hole a decade earlier and, if she is, whether she has "lost her muchness" in the intervening years. They even give her a hard time for getting the name of the location wrong: It's Underland, she's disdainfully told, not Wonderland.

These disputes soon become tiresome, even if one of Alice's champions is played by Johnny Depp. His Mad Hatter is a genuine fashionista whom we get to see designing wacky headgear like there is no tomorrow. There's no denying Depp's gifts and abilities, but this performance feels both indulgent and something we've all seen before.

What is even more unfortunate is the film's attempt to turn itself into an Underland version of "The Lord of the Rings," complete with massed forces of good and evil inevitably headed toward a sadly generic CGI battle to end all battles.

Inspiring the powers of light is the White Queen ( Anne Hathaway), while heading the wicked side is her sister, the dyspeptic Red Queen ( Helena Bonham Carter) and Stayne, the Knave of Hearts ( Crispin Glover), her 7-foot-6 top general.

All these people are in a lather about Alice because it turns out that a venerable document called the Oraculum has foretold that Alice will return to lead the forces of light and slay the dark side's champion, the mighty Jabberwocky.

Alice, of course, insists she is the nonviolent sort and likely to do no such thing but, frankly, what does she know?

With those battle scenes in place to please the boys, Burton and company have taken special care to provide pictures of Alice as a warrior princess in full Joan of Arc armor as a female empowerment icon for the girls in the audience.

While that kind of thing is always in short supply, it would be nicer if that image -- and the movie as a whole -- felt less like corporate moves and more like situations that came from the heart.

Dancing with the Stars 2010 Lineup Review: Is Evan Lysacek the DWTS Season 10 Favorite? FULL VIDEO

The Dancing with the Stars 2010 lineup is out, and 11 brand new celebrities are set to cha cha, samba and waltz their way toward the Mirrorball Trophy. Evan Lysacek,
the 24-year old reigning World and Olympic men's figure skating champion, will join forces with an as-yet-to-be-named pro dancer and test his moves off the ice. Is Lysacek DWTS season 10's celebrity ringer? Let's take a look at the evidence.

First off, Evan Lysacek won his Olympic gold medal not just because he outskated the competition, but because he out-danced the competition. He used his artistry and elegance to defeat Evgeni Plushenko, the pre-event favorite, despite Plushenko's powerful arsenal of jumps. In addition, and perhaps more pointedly, there's no other man included in the Dancing with the Stars 2010 lineup who boasts an Olympic gold medal in what essentially amounts to dancing on skates, so that's a huge checkmark in Lysacek's favor.

Secondly, by all accounts, Evan Lysacek is a serious workhorse. During the Olympic Games broadcasts, commentator Scott Hamilton repeatedly remaked on Lysacek's strong work ethic, and on the number of hours the skater spends practicing his moves. Fresh off an Olympic training regimen, he may be the best prepared of those included in the Dancing with the Stars 2010 lineup to deal with the rigors of ballroom and Latin dance training.

Thirdly, gold medal-winning Olympians have historically excelled on DWTS. Gymnast Shawn Johnson won Dancing with the Stars season 8 with partner Mark Ballas. Figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, also paired with Ballas, took the season 6 title. Yamaguchi was, in fact, so dominant during her tenure on the DWTS that it was hard to imagine anyone else winning the title. The terms 'Olympian' and 'Dancing with the Stars' go together like peanut butter and jelly, and as the sole Olympian on the Dancing with the Stars 2010 lineup list, Lysacek has a leg up on the competition.

Chile curfew extended as troops fail to grasp control after quake

Chilean authorities today extended a night curfew to midday as thousands of troops struggled to contain worsening looting and crime in the wake of the devastating earthquake.

Despite the heavy military presence in the badly damaged city of Concepción, looters burnt stores and residents complained of deteriorating security and slow government delivery of food and other basic supplies. Soldiers fired teargas in efforts to restrict disorder and one person was shot dead.

Residents of the city, with a population of 600,000, said they were organising groups to defend their properties from robbers and looters.

The governor of the region, Jaime Tohá, said that 55 people were arrested on Sunday night for violating the curfew after looters raided almost every market in the city. Some residents rifled through abandoned supermarkets for basic supplies while others took advantage of the crisis to rob banks and empty stores of luxury goods.

The Deputy Interior Minister, Patricio Rosende, said that another 105 people were arrested yesterday for looting and other crimes, and that one person had been shot dead during the night. “Shots were fired. Police took control of the area,” he said, without giving details. Last night the roof of a supermarket in Concepción collapsed when looters set fire to it after police tried to disperse them.

The city’s Mayor has said the criminal elements were now becoming more organised and systematic following Saturday morning’s 8.8-magnitude quake that killed at least 723 people.

Mayor Jacqueline Van Rysselberghe warned against serious “social tension” in the city. “We need food for the people. We are without supplies, and if we don’t resolve that we are going to have serious security problems during the night,” she said. “We are at the end of the month. There are no stocks in the households. But nothing justifies looting, vandalism and theft. We have seen people coming out of supermarkets with plasma screens. If we don’t resolve this problem of food today, we could have a very confrontational situation.”

Eduardo Aundez, a Spanish professor, said: “I feel abandoned by the authorities. We believe the Government didn’t take the necessary measures in time, and now supplies of food and water are going to be much more complicated.”

A series of strong aftershocks — some up to magnitude 6.9 — have driven thousands to flee their homes, setting up tents and makeshift shelters.

Caroline Contreras, a 36-year-old teacher, said: “Government help has been so slow to arrive. The soldiers just arrived and haven’t been able to control the situation. The neighbours where I live are organising to defend themselves because people are starting to rob houses.”

President Michelle Bachelet, who condemned the “pillage and criminality”, dispatched 7,000 soldiers to the region and imposed curfews to restore order, saying her Government was sending emergency food and medicine supplies.

The Government has acknowledged that it has battled to provide aid swiftly because of ruined roads and major power disruptions caused by the quake.

The aid effort suffered a blow last night when a small aircraft carrying a rescue team to Concepción crashed, killing all six people on board.

Residents also criticised the Government’s response in the central city of Talca, where the main hospital partly collapsed, forcing doctors and nurses to treat wounded quake victims in a clinic.

Damian Vera Vergara, 68, said: “We have not got any help from the government. We were expecting more and are still waiting for the three basics — food, water and electricity."

Hopes for survivors in the ruins theft by the quake were still high and rescuers found signs of life in a collapsed apartment block in Concepcion.

Workers heard knocking beneath the ruins of the 14-story building and were drilling into the rubble to try to reach the possible survivors. About 60 people were thought to have been killed when the block crumbled.

Memo to Michelle Obama: Besides taking on childhood obesity, you might try keeping your husband away from the dessert cart.
The spike in President Obama's cholesterol level detected during a physical exam Sunday was apparently caused by overindulgence in sweets and cheeseburgers, according to spokesman Robert Gibbs.

"He would be...the first to tell you that he has probably had a few more cheeseburgers and...more desserts in the last year than I've seen him eat prior to this," said Gibbs, since Obama's days in the Senate.
Though doctors deemed him "fit for duty" during a physical Sunday, Obama's cholesterol was up to a borderline-high 209 from a more desirable 173 during a physical in 2007.
"Look, those guys (chefs) make good desserts over there," Gibbs added. "And I think he's, on more than one occasion, sampled more than he needed to."
It's serious business, when you consider ex-President Bill Clinton's excessive taste for burgers and fries was blamed in part for his quadruple bypass surgery.
The First Lady has jumped on the get-healthy bandwagon, making combatting childhood obesity one of her pet projects.
"I don't think there's a magic formula except...pushing away from the table before they put the pie in front of him," Gibbs said.
The President also still smokes an occasional cigarette, but Gibbs claimed he doesn't know who Obama bums butts from.
"The President continues to chew nicotine gum and...while he's quit smoking, he occasionally falls off the wagon," Gibbs said.

Andrew is the son of Walter Koenig – better known as Star Trek’s Chekov

The actor son of Star Trek veteran Walter Koenig has been found dead in a wood in Vancouver, police have said.
Koenig said his 41-year-old son Andrew, who suffered from depression, “took his own life”.
Police spokeswoman Jana McGuinness said she did not believe anyone else had been involved, adding that a coroner had now taken over the investigation.
Andrew was best known for his recurring role as ‘Boner’ on US sitcom Growing Pains, between 1985-1989.

‘Talk to somebody’
On Thursday, his body was discovered in Vancouver’s 1,000-acre Stanley Park, where Koenig liked to walk and was last seen.
Walter, who played Lieutenant Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series, said his son was “obviously in a lot of pain” to have taken his own life.
In a statement he said that Andrew had given away his belongings and had not been taking his medication. He urged others suffering from depression to seek help.
“If you are one of those people who can’t handle it any more, know people are out there who really care before you make that final decision,” Koenig, 71, said. “Talk to somebody.”

New York City Public Schools Will Be Closed Tomorrow, Klein Says FULL VIDEO

New York City Department of Education Chancellor Joel Klein told lawmakers last week that if the 2010-2011 Executive Budget is not amended, the city would be forced to cut teachers from public schools, compromising the education of the city's schoolchildren.

Klein said the governor's proposed plan would cut $600 million from the city's education budget, which could potentially result in the loss of 8,500 city teaching positions come September.

"If the budget is implemented as proposed, you can be sure that city students will feel the pain of these cuts in the high-quality teachers from their classrooms," warned Klein.

The chancellor introduced several proposals he said would ease the financial burden on schools. His plan called for "smart savings, ensuring access to every dollar and flexibility over available funding."

One of Klein's proposed reforms is to the "last in, first out" policy, a rule that says the last teachers to be hired in a district, must be the ones laid off first. He said the seniority policy can result in the loss of effective teachers saying, "Clearly the only thing worse than having to lay off teachers would be laying off great teachers instead of failing one."

Another of Klein's suggestions is a change to the Absent Teacher Reserve Pool, a process allowing tenured teachers to continue to be paid even when not teaching due to too many teachers in a district.

Klein said a change in the process of firing teachers is also necessary to get rid of temporary reassignment centers or "rubber rooms." Temporary reassignment centers are used to place teachers who have been accused of misconduct such as molestation or abuse. Tenured teachers keep their full pay without needing to teach in such situations.

According to Klein, the "rubber room" process is supposed to last up to 60 days before it is decided if a teacher is guilty or innocent of any accusations or charges, but the process can last years. He also said many teachers within the Absent Teacher Reserve Pool find new jobs quickly, but some remain in the pool without looking for employment, so they can collect money without having to work at a cost of $110 million to taxpayers.

"These are taxpayer dollars that could otherwise pay the salaries of 370 additional teachers, directly benefiting our students and schools," said Klein.

New York State United Teachers Executive Vice President Andrew Pallotta later disagreed with Klein, saying most teachers wait in a "rubber room" for about six months, either deciding to leave themselves or after reaching an agreement with school officials.

Klein also urged lawmakers to lift the state's cap on charter schools, saying it is needed to ensure the state, if it does not get awarded funds in the first round of federal Race to the Top education funding, will have a successful application for the second round. He said demand for seats in the city's existing charter schools far outpaces available supply, with more than 35,000 children on charter school waitlists.

The chancellor also said he wanted to stop the practice of reimbursing the parents of special needs students who drive their children to school when they could be riding the bus. He said it is possible to add two or three additional students to special education classrooms to save money, as well as place a cap on the amount of special education students taken on by a school and the amount of services, such as speech and physical therapy, that schools provide.

"I want to be clear, I am not talking about diminishing the quality of services that our students need. Rather, I'm calling for enhanced flexibility to make decisions that impact our classrooms," said Klein.

Senate Education Committee Chairwoman Suzi Oppenheimer, D-Mamaroneck, questioned Klein, asking "if there are so many students waitlisted for charter schools, why have more public schools not been converted into charters?"

Although the charter school cap is now at 200, any public school can be converted into a charter without counting toward the cap.

The chancellor said 16 schools have been converted so far and he is hoping 120 will be converted by 2011. He said due to economic issues, traditional schools are converted more slowly than they would like, but they are opening fast considering the high level of quality they are trying to ensure the schools have.

"It's easy to open a charter school," said Klein, "but hard to open a quality charter school."

Assembly Education Committee Chairwoman Catherine Nolan, D-Queens, and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Carl Kruger, D-Brooklyn, both criticized Klein and the job he is doing.

Kruger said the chancellor treats parents and lawmakers as annoyances and continues to ignore their concerns.

"You come to use for money, but you don't come to use for direction," said Kruger. The senator also expressed frustration that he and other lawmakers are unable to answer constituents' questions about their children's education because they are not kept in the loop.

Nolan asked why there are still close to 400 trailers in the city being used as temporary classrooms when the city has been given money to build or find more rooms. "Where is the taskforce and initiative? We are not feeling any progress," said Nolan.

Kruger called Klein's term "nine years of torture, nine years of acrimony, nine years of nail biting and hand twisting," with Nolan's agreement.

Klein said he knows the city needs to create more classrooms but that it "doesn't come by magic."

Klein told lawmakers the governor's budget would lead to a $600 million cut to city schools along with another $600 million lost due to required unfunded mandates, putting the city in debt by $1.2 billion in the coming school year.

Sen. Craig Johnson, D-Port Washington, told state Education Commissioner David Steiner earlier in the hearing that the number of state mandates imposed on schools represents a failure of the state Education Department. Steiner said he would post the full list of state and federal education mandates on his department's Web site with a ballpark number of what each costs.

So that lawmakers can make an informed decision on whether the Executive Budget should be amended to provide more support for New York City schools, Kruger asked Klein to release documentation showing where city school funding has been going and how the system runs.

United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew also spoke out against the education budget cuts but said, like last year, they would continue to work with lawmakers to protect education. "We owe it to the city's children," the union leader said.

So, what can be expected at the Apple announcement press event? Well, clearly, there will be news about the newest Apple produce, the Apple Tablet (iSlate? iPad?) Various sources are expecting that several media deals will be announced – so that the Apple Tablet will have exclusive content – probably a New York Times’ e-book edition, perhaps one from the Wall Street Journal, or even a deal with FOX News. Nobody knows for sure.

The most important Apple announcement will be related to the iPhone, Apple’s communications device. Sadly, the iPhone is tied to AT&T. The big announcement will be a Verizon iPhone. Then, all those rich moms and dads will get their kids an iPhone. (Verizon has some 91.2 million subscribers.)

AT&T has about 81.6 million customers. Back when the iPhone was launched, it was popular to switch mobile carriers just to get an iPhone. But those kinds of sales ended quickly, and many have wondered how much longer Apple is going to wait to cash in on Verizon’s market share.

Tim Tebow Superbowl Ad:Save a few execs and the Tebow family, nobody has seen his 30-second Super Bowl commercial that is expected to run during the Feb. 7 telecast. We can guess which controversial message is strongly implied — pro life — but we truly don’t know the contents of thecommercial that features Tim Tebow and mother Pam, in conjunction with Christian-based group Focus on the Family.

But the mere presence of the looming commercial has caused some to take a stand.

A national coalition of women’s groups have urged CBS to scrap the Tebow ad. The pressure will mount, so it will be interesting to see whether CBS backs thecommercial or relents.

Sentinel columnist George Diaz salutes Tebow for sticking to his values, but adds that religious views have no business in the Super Bowl. Tebow said at his Senior Bowl arrival that he understands not everyone will agree with thecommercial, but he stands behind it.

Personally, I don’t expect the Tebows to hit everyone over the head with the pro-life message during the commercial. I think it will be strictly anecdotal — tell the story, mom could have died by giving birth, family kept faith and Tim was born healthy with a promising life ahead. Surely the pro-life stance is suggested, but let’s not assume thecommercial condemns those who don’t believe in pro life. I don’t understand why this commercial forces everyone to choose one extreme or the other.

Prince, who is from Minnesota, told FOX Twin Cities affiliate that after he saw the Vikings beat-down of the Dallas Cowboys last week he went home and cranked out "Purple and Gold" because he "saw the future."

The Vikings love the song and have put it on their website. They play the New Orleans Saints Sunday, Jan. 24 in the NFC championship game. The winner will face the winner of the Colts-Jets game in the Super Bowl on Feb. 7.

In the online pictures, Woods is shown from a distance, holding a coffee cup and wearing shorts and a hooded sweatshirt as he walks outside the sex addiction rehabilitation clinic he reportedly checked into recently. Woods seems to be looking in the direction of the camera, though it is not obvious that he knows he is being photographed. What is not clear is how the National Enquirer was able to put itself in position to photograph a patient at the normally secretive sex addiction rehabilitation center.

While to date Woods has been able to avoid the public eye as he deals with his crumbling marriage and decimated public reputation, it would seem inevitable that much of Woods' rehabilitation will need to occur in public. The pictures of Woods only serve to remind us of that fact.

One of the few things working in Woods' favor is that his ordeal this winter has occurred during golf's off-season. While it seems likely he will eventually miss some tournaments, the story did not break in the middle of the season and did not require an immediate suspension of his golfing season. As a result, he has been able to disappear from the public eye much more easily and his sex scandal has not yet had a direct impact, really, on his golf career.

But at some point after Woods completes his stay at the sex addiction clinic that he has been pictured in front of, he will presumably try to return as much as he can to his former life. When he does, it seems inevitable that public scrutiny will be even greater than it was before.

'The Blind Side' is based on a true story about NFL player Michael Oher. "That is a man to be admired," the actress said of Oher. Shock and disbelief met news that Bears defensive end Gaines Adams died Sunday morning after going into cardiac arrest because of an enlarged heart, according to Greenwood (S.C.) County deputy coroner Marcia Kelley-Clark.
Adams, 26, had been taken to the emergency room at Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood after going into cardiac arrest at his family's Greenwood home. He died at 7:21 Chicago time.
''This time, it turned out to be a tragedy. I just hope people remember him as the great guy he was.''
Adams, a native of Greenwood, was an All-American for the Tigers before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made him the fourth overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft. He led all rookies with six sacks that season.
The Bears acquired Adams from the Buccaneers in October for a second-round pick in the 2010 draft. He saw limited action this season but was expected to play a bigger role for the Bears next season.
''I talked to Gaines a couple of weeks ago,'' former Buccaneers coach and current ''Monday Night Football'' analyst Jon Gruden said. ''I was telling him about [Bears defensive line coach Rod Marinelli], and he was very excited to get a fresh start, and I know Rod was very excited about working with him this offseason. They had big plans for him. You would've liked Gaines. Everybody who knew Gaines liked Gaines. This is a tragic loss for us all.''
Greenwood County coroner James T. Coursey said Adams appeared to be in perfect health, according to news reports. The Greenwood Sheriff's Office and the Greenwood County Coroner's Office are expected to investigate.
The Bears issued the following statement:
''We are stunned and saddened by the news of Gaines' passing. Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time.''
In high school, Adams was 6-4, 215 pounds with a 38-inch vertical jump and could run the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds. He played defensive end for a small private school but was better known as a receiver, catching 158 passes for 4,394 yards (27.8 per catch) and 65 touchdowns. Defensively, he had 341 tackles, 33 sacks and 10 interceptions.
''They tried public school and didn't like it,'' Adams' mother, Linda, told the Orlando Sentinel in 2007 of her two children. ''They didn't like all the disrespect, with kids talking back to teachers. We didn't allow that in our home.''
He wasn't considered a major-college prospect because he posted his gaudy statistics while playing eight-man football. With his college options limited, he opted to attend Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia, where he had 22 sacks in one season before signing with Clemson. He became the Tigers' all-time sack leader with 28, including 12Â½ as a senior.
''I was shocked and saddened to hear this news,'' said Tommy Bowden, who was the Tigers' coach during Adams' career at Clemson. ''When I heard the news, I thought it was his father because he has the same name. I just couldn't believe it was Gaines.''
Adams grew up rooting for the Buccaneers and idolizing former Mount Carmel and Illinois standout Simeon Rice. He was thrilled when the Buccaneers made him the first defensive player drafted in '07.
''Gaines was a quiet, humble kid and is far too young to be gone,'' Buccaneers cornerback Ronde Barber said. ''He had so much potential that had yet to be achieved, and I'm very sad that the full extent of his life won't be realized.''
Adams is survived by his 5-year-old son, longtime girlfriend, parents and sister, according to Stuckey. Funeral arrangements are pending.

The women of Hollywood were shown a lot of love at this year's Critic's Choice Awards, particularly Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock.

The stars gave audiences an eyeful Friday night when Bradley Cooper announced that they had tied to win Best Actress: Streep for "Julie & Julia" and Bullock for "The Blind Side."

Streep and Bullock took to the stage and proceeded to give each other a spontaneous open mouthed kiss, much to Cooper's enjoyment.

The smooch was no doubt an homage to the Adam Lambert's controversial same sex kiss at this year's MVMAs. And if anyone wants to complain, they'll no doubt get the kiss off.

Both Streep and Bullock have been making waves in Hollywood for disproving the belief that female-driven films cannot bring in the big bucks. Streep became a top earner with the summer hit "Mamma Mia!", while "The Blind Side" is the first movie in history to pass $200 million with only one female A-list star to support it.

Later on in the ceremony, Kathryn Bigelow officially ousted the boys of Tinseltown by becoming the first woman ever to take home the Best Director award.

An unofficial member of the boys club, having directed the likes of "Point Break" and "K-19: The Widowmaker," the 58-year-old Californian took home the gold for "The Hurt Locker." Her gritty take on an elite bomb squad unit in Iraq beat out "Avatar," "Inglourious Basterds" and "Precious."

Other ladies who ruled the ceremony included talk show host Mo'Nique, who won best supporting actress for her terrifying turn as an abusive mother in "Precious." Best Young Actress went to Irish starlet Saoirse Ronan, whose poignant turn as a raped and murdered school girl lit up the otherwise flawed, "The Lovely Bones."

One of the highlights of the evening was a tribute to John Hughes, the 80s film director who died in August.

John Krasinski and Amy Poehler appeared dressed as Andie and Duckie from "Pretty in Pink" to remember the late director whose teen fims - including “Ferris Bueller's Day Off?a>?? and “The Breakfast Club” – changed the depiction of teenagers on the big screen forever.

"To call anyone the voice of a generation sounds overblown and cliché," Poehler said. "It's hard to think of a filmmaker who made so many movies so many of us know by heart."

Sheep With Human Face: Really an Amazing Born Lamb – This maybe an amazing news today, a sheep gave birth to a dead lamb with a human-like face. The said lamb was born in a village not far from the city of Izmir in Turkey.
Certain news sites are reporting that in Turkey, a sheep gave birth to a stillborn lamb with strikingly human facial features. I’ve never heard of the possibility of anything but the worst kind of porn being the product bestiality.
We never know if this was the real deal or not because local new sites claimed a report that the locals burned the dead lamb-baby before scientists could examine it.
Meanwhile, Erhan Elibol, a vet, performed a caesarean on the animal to take the lamb out, but was horrified to see that the features of the lamb’s snout bore a striking resemblance to a human face.
“I’ve seen mutations with cows and sheep before. I’ve seen a one-eyed calf, a two-headed calf, a five-legged calf. But when I saw this youngster I could not believe my eyes. His mother could not deliver him so I had to help the animal,” the 29-year-old veterinary said.
The said lamb’s head was described with a human features on the eyes, nose and the mouth and only the ears were those of a sheep. Remember a similar case in where a goat from Zimbabwe gave birth to a similar youngster in September 2009. The said mutant baby born with a human-like head stayed alive for several hours until the village resident also burned him.

62-year-old “General” Larry Platt has become a sensation after his performance of original song “Pants On The Ground” on “American Idol” on Wednesday night — and in an interview with Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush for Access and “The Billy Bush Show,” the singer explained the song’s origins.

“Everybody in America’s singing my song, ‘Pants on the Ground.’ I made that song up, years ago,” he said.

And he added that the song has a simple message. “It’s about these kids and grown folk walking around with their pants down,” he said. “Get these pants up!”

The singer then gave a special acapella encore performance of “Pants on the Ground” for Bush.

On Wednesday night’s audition, Platt made judges Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson and guest judge Mary J. Blige laugh and sing along — while Simon Cowell attempted to shush them, in vain.

However, despite his best efforts, Platt never had a serious shot at the “Idol” top 12 — the show cuts off eligible contestants at age 28.

They confront the other housemates, all of whom deny they have a problem with it, which leads Sammi and Ronnie to drop the hammer on Snooki for talking crap about them. She folds quickly and apologizes, and which point Sammi makes her apologize further in front of everyone else. Seriously, this is hard to watch. So far on this series, Snooki has all but prostituted herself out — unsuccessfully — to a steady stream of guys, she has been punched in the face (twice!) and now she is forced to grovel because she got a little chirpy whilst drunk at a bar. Sammi is approaching super-villain status.

That night, we are backing to more familiar territory of going to bars and picking up. Mike brings home a girl, and the two of them end up in a hot tub, then a bed. Vinny and a girl hang out on a hammock. Snooki even meets someone nice, though she seems befuddled as to why they do not have sex even though they shared a bed.

Mini-review: In which Mike "The Situation" manages to reduce one housemate to tears and incite another into physically assaulting him. Such people skills he has.

Recap: Ugh. The first 10 minutes is a painful re-examination of Snooki’s ultimatum to Ronnie and Sammi in the last epsiode, in which she advised the happy couple that “everyone in the house” was sick of them just going off and hanging out by themselves. They confront the other housemates, all of whom deny they have a problem with it, which leads Sammi and Ronnie to drop the hammer on Snooki for talking crap about them. She folds quickly and apologizes, and which point Sammi makes her apologize further in front of everyone else. Seriously, this is hard to watch. So far on this series, Snooki has all but prostituted herself out — unsuccessfully — to a steady stream of guys, she has been punched in the face (twice!) and now she is forced to grovel because she got a little chirpy whilst drunk at a bar. Sammi is approaching super-villain status.

That night, we are backing to more familiar territory of going to bars and picking up. Mike brings home a girl, and the two of them end up in a hot tub, then a bed. Vinny and a girl hang out on a hammock. Snooki even meets someone nice, though she seems befuddled as to why they do not have sex even though they shared a bed.

The next night they are back at the bar, and drama breaks out. Sammi is mad because Ronnie talks to a girl! Mike is mad because Vinny talks to his sister, then a different girl! found, there was no topping his performance once it was shown. No doubt the American Idol video will go viral on this tune. Even judge Simon Cowell said he had "a horrible feeling that song could be a hit." That line alone guaranteed that the video would go viral.

The American Idol judges were joined by R&B artist Mary J. Blige in the capital of the Dirty South for the second episode and the second round of auditions. They would hand out a few less gold tickets in Atlanta (25) than in Boston (31), but the tickets that did go out went to pretty talented individuals, like church singer Jermaine Sellers. However, it was the end of the program and General Larry Platt made American Idol the show to watch Wednesday night.

The General stood front and center on the American Idol stage and like several others before him (William Hung, Renaldo Lapuz, that crazy slap-rapper in New Orleans), he did his thing. And as bad as it was, there was something that was fun and infectious about it. After Simon Cowell asked him the name of his song ("Pants On The Ground"), General Larry Platt explained it was about pulling one's pants up. He then started singing and dancing. The song consisted of two lines of "Pants On The Ground" followed by a third line that ended in a word that rhymed with "ground." Then there was an extended set of double rhymed lines that ended back at "Pants on the ground." For example, the song existed, in part:

"Pants on the ground,
Pants on the ground,
You're lookin' like a fool with your pants on the ground."

Simple. Direct. Strangely catchy.

Before it was over, only Simon Cowell refused to get in on the hand-clapping, foot-stomping infectiousness. Judges Kara DioGuardi and Mary J. Blige were laughing uproariously by the time Simon got the General to stop.

Hundreds of thousands of Haitians are awaiting the start of a global rescue effort in the wake of the country's devastating earthquake.

BBC correspondents say the situation is increasingly desperate, with no coordinated rescue plan so far and aid only trickling in.
The search for survivors continues but rescuers have little lifting equipment and are often using their bare hands.
Tens of thousands are feared dead and up to three million affected.
Aid groups say there is a race against time to find survivors under the rubble of the collapsed buildings - the first priority of the rescue effort.
Heavy lifting gear and sniffer dogs are desperately needed to seek out trapped victims, with medicine, food and water also in short supply.
Elisabeth Byrs of the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said: "The priority is to find survivors. We are working against the clock."
The head of Medecins du Monde, Olivier Bernard, told AFP news agency that aid had to arrive by Thursday evening.
"To save lives, surgery must be available ideally within the first 48 hours."
A few US aid planes and a 50-strong Chinese rescue team with sniffer dogs have landed at the airport serving the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Other plane-loads of rescuers and relief supplies are said to be on the way from the EU, Canada, Russia and Latin American nations.
A British rescue team with heavy lifting gear and dogs has landed in the Dominican Republic and will be in Haiti later on Thursday.
International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander said: "This is a tragedy on a massive scale. Britain is playing its part in the huge international response."

US President Barack Obama said the "people of Haiti will have the full support of the United States" in an "aggressive" aid campaign.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has cancelled a trip to Asia to deal with the crisis. Her husband, Bill Clinton, the UN special envoy for Haiti, told the Washington Post the quake was "one of the great humanitarian emergencies in the history of the Americas".
The USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier will arrive on Thursday. The USS Bataan, carrying a Marine expeditionary unit, is also on its way. The Pentagon said it was "seriously considering" sending thousands of marines.
The World Bank is funding $100m of emergency aid.
The World Food Programme is working on supplying 15,000 tonnes of food and the Red Cross has begun a $10m appeal.
The help is desperately needed as there is no coordinated rescue at present.
Doctor's assistant Jimitre Coquillon told Associated Press: "This is much worse than a hurricane. There's no water. There's nothing. Thirsty people are going to die."
Haitian President Rene Preval could not give an official estimate of the dead, saying: "I don't know... up to now, I heard 50,000... 30,000."
He spoke of how he stepped over dead bodies and heard cries of those trapped in the parliament building.

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and correspondents say it simply does not have the infrastructure to manage a rescue operation.

One Chilean UN peacekeeper told Reuters: "We just don't know what to do. You can see how terrible the damage is. We have not been able to get into all the areas."
The UN peacekeepers, who played a key role in maintaining public order in Haiti even before the quake, have been deployed to control any outbreaks of unrest as reports come in of looting.
The UN says 16 personnel are confirmed dead and between 100 and 150 staff are missing. They include UN mission head Hedi Annabi.
Medical aid agency Medecins sans Frontieres reported a "massive influx" of casualties at its makeshift clinics, many of them with severe injuries.
Patients with "severe traumas, head wounds, crushed limbs" have been streaming into MSF's temporary structures but the agency is only able to offer them basic medical care, spokesman Paul McPhun told reporters.
Thousands of Haitians spent a second night in the open on Wednesday, too scared to sleep inside damaged buildings. Many sang hymns to keep up their spirits.
The BBC's Matthew Price visited the grounds of one hospital and spoke of seeing about 100 bodies - but there were many people bedding down for the night to sleep among the dead.
The 7.0-magnitude quake, Haiti's worst in two centuries, struck at 1653 local time (2153 GMT) on Tuesday, just 15km (10 miles) south-west of Port-au-Prince and close to the surface.

Biblical was the word Secretary of State Clinton used to describe the damage a powerful earthquake visited on Haiti.

And even in a country that has endured deadly hurricanes, unrelenting violence and grinding poverty, the destruction was epic.

Not even the churches were spared.

In the light of day, the wrath of Mother Nature was revealed. She did not discriminate between rich and poor.

She tore down the Presidential Palace, the United Nations complex, the homes of the wealthy few that hugged the hills above Port-au-Prince.

She tore down the shoddy shanties in the swarming neighborhoods where most Haitians live, surviving on $2 a day.

She reduced hospitals and businesses and schools to rubble, burying thousands in the process.

She knocked down cell phone towers, all but cutting off Haiti from the rest of the world.

The quake survivors who were not heaving aside debris in a desperate search for other survivors stood stupefied by the sheer scope of the ruination.

Others moved about a city that was suddenly strange to them - a lunar landscape created by a remorseless force that left a crucifix here, an edifice there, as if to mock them.

Port-au-Prince was Warsaw or Dresden circa 1945 - a ruined hulk that bore the barest resemblance to what it once was.

Except the shabby Haitian capital was not much of a capital to begin with.

"Port-au-Prince was a lost city. Now it is a destroyed city," former Haitian Prime Minister Gerard Latortue said yesterday.

Perhaps now, he said, "this could be a chance to rebuild Haiti in a new way."

Those were hopeful words on a day when the pitted streets of the capital were lined with bodies - most of them shrouded in sheets.

Rebuilding would have to wait. And all day long and deep into the night, the first task of the living was to claim the dead.

Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of the earthquake in Haiti and ensuing destruction, reports out of the country are chaotic and the death toll has not been estimated.

One frequently re-tweeted post on Twitter by journalist Ann Curry indicates that all hospitals in Port-au-Prince have been abandoned or have collapsed:

Doctors Without borders says ALL hospitals in Haiti’s Port au Prince area have either collapsed or been abandoned.

Another terrifying tweet being passed around indicates that the death toll is likely to be very high, and suggests medical assistance is nowhere to be found in the destroyed city:

The Prime Minister of Haiti estimates a death toll in the hundreds of thousands. Doctors Without Borders says 800 members are currently unaccounted for, and initial reports indicate Haiti’s main prison has collapsed, freeing many inmates. United Nations mission chief in Haiti Hedi Annabi was likely among a number of UN staff who perished in the quake or aftermath.

Scientists have confirmed that the strongest earthquake to hit Haiti in 200 years registered at magnitude 7.0. The tragedy struck at 16:53:09 or 04:53:09 PM local time on January 12. The brute force of the tremors sent down many a building including the UN office in the country’s capital of Port-au-Prince. The presidential palace was also damaged. At least one hospital is reported to have collapsed along with many commercial buildings, schoolhouses, and other infrastructure.

Word from the International Red Cross places the number of affected people at around 3 million. The IRC also estimated that the earthquake claimed around 500,000 lives. With the country being the poorest in the Western Hemisphere, it surely needs help from other countries, some of which have already dispatched rescue groups to help in the search and rescue missions undertaken across the Caribbean nation.

Pandemonium is in the streets as people are left without homes and their basic necessities. There are also hundreds if not thousands of people left untreated. Doctors and other medical workers are hard at work just to treat as many people as they can. With some hospitals damaged bythe earthquake , they have to make do with makeshift triages. It is expected that unless other countries send in needed medicine, there will be a shortage of it soon enough withthe number of people needing medical attention.

Immediately after the earthquake struck, communication lines went down. This made organizing search and rescue missions a nightmare. Even with that handicap though, firemen and policemen along with civilians worked well into the night to help free people from under the wreckage of fallen buildings.

It can be remembered that the nation was recently ravished by a series of hurricanes leaving thousands dead and homeless. Still in rebuilding mode, they are once again hit by this tragedy. Fortunately, several countries are quick to send help like medical professionals and rescue units. Numerous countries have also pledged to send monetary aid to help the ravaged island nation.

Pat Robertson recently blamed the Haiti earthquake on a pact with the devil that the Haitians supposedly made in the early 19th century:

Pat Robertson, the evangelical Christian who once suggested God was punishing Americans with Hurricane Katrina, says a “pact to the devil” brought on the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Officials fear more than 100,000 people have died as a result of Tuesday’s 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti.

Robertson, the host of the “700 Club,” blamed the tragedy on something that “happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it.”

The Haitians “were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III and whatever,” Robertson said on his broadcast Wednesday. “And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, ‘We will serve you if you will get us free from the French.’ True story. And so, the devil said, ‘OK, it’s a deal.’ ”

Native Haitians defeated French colonists in 1804 and declared independence.

“You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other.”

It seems that Robertson has learned nothing from the outcry generated by his 2001 comments endorsing Jerry Falwell’s claim that the 9/11 attacks were a punishment that God inflicted on America because of “the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, [and] People For the American Way.”

In addition to blaming this tragedy on a wholly fictitious pact with the devil, Robertson also confused Napoleon I (the French ruler the Haitians actually rebelled against in the early 1800s), with his nephew Napoleon III, whose reign didn’t start until 1852.

As a fellow Yale Law School graduate, I’d have to say that the Reverend Robertson isn’t one of our alma mater’s more impressive products.

Turning the CFB world on it's ear, USC announced late today that Lane Kiffin will be named their new head coach. This change comes only 14 months after Kiffin replaced long time Vol coach Phil Fulmer. Wringing his hands both literally and figuratively at his hastily called press conference, Kiffin said that the decision was a hard one and that ultimately, USC was the probably the only job he would leave Tennessee for.

Kiffin's departure leaves in it's wake a slew of wreckage from his inaugural stint as a college head coach--the pre-season trash talking, the admonishments by commissioner Mike Slive, three players arrested for armed robbery and all the secondary recruiting violations, including the well-publicized one concerning recruiting hostesses. It's certainly ironic that USC, a school who may very well be in the cross hairs of the NCAA's enforcement division, has now hired a coach who's recruiting habits are to say the least, suspect.

Today also saw a public turn-down of the possibility of a job offer by Jacksonville Jaguar head coach Jack Del Rio, a former player at USC, but someone who has no college coaching experience. Del Rio was the second name to be mentioned behind Oregon's Mike Riley. DC Monte Kiffin and Ed Orgeron are leaving with Lane Kiffin, and word has it that an effort is under foot to get current UCLA OC Norm Chow back across town to his old stomping grounds, where he served as OC under Pete Carroll early in the 2000s.

While the dust settles on today's event, I don't think that I'm going out on a limb by saying that Kiffin, by suddenly jumping ship to USC, will now become the most hated coach in all of CFB, jumping such notables as Nick Saban and Bobby Petrino, who both had perceived 'loyalty' issues. As if he wasn't already.

UPDATE: There are unconfirmed reports that students ganged up en mass and have attempted to block the departure of Kiffin and were dispersed with tear gas. There are also rumors that departing coach Ed Orgeron has told early Tennessee signees not to go to class this semester in an apparent attempt to get them to sign with USC before their committment is official. Again, as of now, these are unconfirmed and we will have more as it breaks.

USC has replaced departed football coach Pete Carroll with Tennessee’s Lane Kiffin, USC announced late Tuesday.

Kiffin, who served as an assistant under Carroll from 2001-06 before leaving to become the Oakland Raiders head coach, is leaving after one tumultuous season at Tennessee that saw him enrage his fellow SEC coaches, draw the ire of the NCAA and upgrade Tennessee’s talent base. Kiffin will bring his father, Volunteers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, and defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron with him. Orgeron served in those roles at USC under Carroll. He left USC after the 2004 season to become the head coach at Ole Miss.
Kiffin was scheduled to meet with Tennessee players at about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday to break the news.

Tennessee's Lane Kiffin is the surprise choice of Southern California to replace Pete Carroll as football coach. The hiring was announced by the school Tuesday night, hours after Carroll was introduced as coach of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks.

Kiffin, 34, is a disciple of Carroll, serving on his staff from 2001 to 2006. In his last two seasons at USC, Kiffin was the program's offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator.

"Lane brings a lot to the table," USC athletics director Mike Garrett said in a statement. "He has a coaching background both in the pros and in the best collegiate conferences. He has a great command of the X's and O's.

"He is familiar with the Trojan landscape and will be a great representative of our university. ... And, very importantly, he has proven to be one of the finest recruiters anywhere."

Kiffin left USC in 2007 to coach the Oakland Raiders, becoming the youngest coach in the NFL's modern era. He was fired in September 2008 after four games of his second season with a 5-15 overall record.

ABC had teased that one of the ladies vying for the heart of pilot Jake Pavelka had found her wings of love waiting in the wings behind the scenes of the reality show. Her identity was going to be revealed on the upcoming episode Monday (Jan. 11).

RadarOnline, however, claims that it's uncovered Rozlyn -- the blonde model/hairstylist/makeup artist from Virginia -- as the one with a wandering eye, thanks to the help of her ex-boyfriend ... from middle school. Ronald Rutsen Eagle, Jr. has the dubious honor of being her first boyfriend ever and weighs in on her situation with her current boyfriend.

"She is a really a wonderful person who has had a tough time because of the situation," he tells Radar.

In the premiere, Rozlyn was among the many women (like Channy) who used an aviation pun to get Jake's attention. She came off a little bitchier and ruthless than most, but didn't really stand out otherwise.

And while it may be considered deceitful for Rozlyn to be pursuing a romance off camera with someone other than the bachelor himself, at least she's not sitting around crying and in denial when Jake is on overnight date with another contestant.

In his post-premiere EW.com blog on Tuesday, Bachelor host Chris Harrison revealed that the "scandal" set to go down during next week's episode refers to an "inappropriate" relationship between one Bachelor cast member and one show producer--and though his language is (purposefully) vague and short on details, the season promo that aired at the end of Monday night's episode made the accusation clear, via another woman's voiceover: "She's having a sexual affair with someone in the Bachelor house!"

Yesterday, Bachelor blogger turned anti-ABC crusader Reality Steve took to his blog to tell a different story, revealing that the contestant in question is single mother/model/make-up artist Rozlyn Papa. Steve cited an unnamed source who revealed that no sexual affair occurred, and that the "scandal" storyline was concocted to cover up Rozlyn's voluntary departure from the show after she felt betrayed by producers.

RadarOnline spoke to Rozlyn today, and while her contract with ABC likely kept her from spilling too many details about her time on the show, one statement came out crystal clear: "No, I did not have a sexual relationship with a producer on the show."

"What they mean by inappropriate relationship is not what inappropriate relationship means in the real world," said Papa.

"I had a relationship with someone on the show that didn't benefit them [the network and senior producers]."

She clarified the nature of her relationship with the since-fired producer: "We remained really close but we are not dating now."

Echoing The Bachelorette's Wes Hayden (remember last season's "villain" who claimed he was the victim of a bad edit?), Papa blames the show's producers for the way she was (and will be, come Monday night) inaccurately portrayed on the program:

"This is a TV show and it's made for entertainment, but it is a far cry from reality. I know that things on television weren't always as they seemed, but I had no idea the extent of the show manipulation."

Harrison revealed in his blog that the "inappropriate" contestant would be asked to leave the show. Despite a tarnished reputation on national TV, Papa denied making any bad decisions and told RadarOnline, "I am going to hold my head high, I do not regret anything that happened."

'The Bachelor': Rozlyn is scandal girl

Tonight on "The Bachelor," Rozlyn is "revealed" as the scandalous bachelorette.

After host Chris Harrison gives the girls a run-down on how the dates work, it is revealed that the first Group Date consists of Ashleigh, Christina, Corrie, Gia, Rozlyn and Valishia.

Group Date
Jake takes the aforementioned ladies to an In Style photoshoot. Rozlyn and Gia immediately start sharpening their model claws on each other, as Rozlyn comments that she's a bridal model while Gian is a lingerie model. Gag me, Roz. Gia corrects her by saying she's a swimsuit model. I want to grab them by their long hair and clunk their heads together like coconuts.

Rozlyn also somehow manages to flash her coochie during the shoot. Yay for underwear! Christina is being all insecure and nervous, which is just as annoying as the cattiness of Gia and Rozlyn. Christina was also the girl in the premiere who was obsessed with the other girls flaunting their ta-tas. The other girls three girls are just trying to have a good time.

Afterwards they have cocktails and Gia gets some alone time but is quickly interrupted by Ashleigh in a TEENY bikini, demanding that Jake go for a swim with her. Christina can't take all the cattiness and bikini-ness, so she gets a little drunk, much to Jake's consternation.

Rozlyn gets alone time with Jake and starts making out with him, which earns her the rose. Of course it does. C'mon Jake. Don't fall for her stuff. I didn't even like Rozlyn before we knew she was Scandal Girl.

Back at the Bunny Ranch, a diamond necklace arrives and all the girls go bonkers. They find out the next morning it's for Ali to wear on her one-on-one date.

Ali's Date
Jake takes Ali flying, which is pretty incredible since she's afraid of it. Also, they finally actually play "On the Wings of Love." DRINK! Once they land in Palm Springs, they drive off in a roadster (totally awesome) to a romantic dinner (complete with a pretty woo-woo smooch) and then a concert by Chicago. They kick up "Saturday in the Park," which is my FAVORITE Chicago song! Oooh! I'd be so nutso on that date. Ali love sit and they dance and kiss. It really seems like an excellent date.

Group Date II
Bunny Ranch. The women find out that the second Group Date will be for Ashley, Elizabeth, Jessie, Kathryn, and Vienna. That leaves out Ella, Michelle and Tenley. This prompts Michelle to once again say she "has so much love to give." Anybody else picture her screaming, "If I can't have you, nobody can!" while stabbing Jake in his sleep? Just me?

Anyway, the Group Date II is a day at a closed amusement park. Closed to the public. Not like a creepy silent amusement park. I'm so jealous, I love roller coasters and Six Flags usually has great ones, only surpassed by Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH.

Ashley gets her crazy on with "Jake IS my man, he just doesn't know it yet." Speaking of crazy, Michelle is packing her bags back at the house. I suppose it's better than taking a razor to your wrists in the bathtub. Tenley and Rozlyn try to convince her to stay. I think that's Rozlyn. She looks weird without makeup.

Elizabeth takes some alone time by the carnival games and Vienna says Elizabeth is sneaky. Who finds Vienna attractive? I do not understand this. She's a total butterface with kind-of scraggly bleached hair. Blech. I'm not a fan. Elizabeth then gives Jake a note she wrote about him where she asks him not to kiss her until he knows he's going to ONLY kiss her. It's a bold move. That's cool as hell, Elizabeth.

Vienna takes her alone time and confesses that in high school she was engaged to her Pastor's son. She called it off at the age of 17 and then a month later he was already with a new wife and having a kid so she ran off and eloped in response. Geez, girlfriend. Man, Vienna seems way too young for Jake. I'm surprised he didn't cap the youth limit at 25 or 26 since he's 31.

Ashley interrupts Vienna cryfest with drinks and steals Jake away. It's a little callous. I don't like Vienna but I don't think I could have interrupted like that. Ashley gets a hug for her troubles -- haha, no kiss for you, weirdo.

At the end of the night, Jake hands out his rose to Elizabeth, interviewing that he wanted to show her that he respects her values. He then dismisses the rest of the girls and Ashley and Vienna both look like they swallowed a bug. Um, were Jessie and Kathryn even ON that date? Oh look, there they are. In the limo on the ride back to the Bunny Ranch.

Elizabeth now gets romantic alone time with Jake and totally teases him about kissing her. Oh, that's so mean! He kisses her forehead instead and then the fireworks start going off. Awww.

Cocktail Party
Ella's birthday was the day before so Jake brings her a little cupcake with a candle. Awww. Tenley is next for alone time. She chickens out on tellling him about having been married. Meanwhile, Michelle is getting her crazy all over the other bachelorettes. Jake asks her for alone time and she immediately starts in on how she's there for the right reasons and she was so upset when her name wasn't on a date card. When Kathryn interrupts, Michelle very passive-aggressively says it's okay if he leaves. If Michelle could light someone on fire using just the power of her stare, Kathryn would have to be identified with dental records.

Meanwhile, Chris Harrison has taken Rozlyn outside. He confronts her about an "inappropriate relationship" with one of the staffers. Chris Harrison is actually choked up, is that for real? He says the staffer has been fired and that Rozlyn cannot form a relationship with Jake now. She argues that other women came on the show with peopel they cared about but Chris says that a line was crossed with the staffer and that Rozlyn is being removed from the house.

Rozlyn goes back into the house and tells the girls that she's leaving. They are all surprised and shocked. Chris then has to break the news to Jake, who says he's also surprised and shocked. He doesn't seem nearly as distraught as Chris Harrison, though, which is interesting. A security guy is standing guard as Rozlyn packs her bags. Is she going to steal the towels or something?

There are two different versions of this "scandal," depending on what you read. Chris Harrison and Jake are acting like Rozlyn practically had sex with the producer. They don't come out and say it, but they're making it sound like a huge deal. Meanwhile, Rozlyn is maintaining she befriended a producer on the show. In the world of "reality TV," that's a big no-no. But I don't think it warrants painting Rozlyn as some kind of scarlet woman (and I don't even like her).

Chris and Jake tell the other women about Rozlyn's dismissal. The girls are pretty well gobsmacked. Jake says that he thought Rozlyn was here for him. Um, she could be there for you and still make a new friend, dude. I mean, he's acting like she was doing the producer on the kitchen counter.

When they leave, the women take turns giving talking-heads where they act like Rozlyn was messing around with the producer. See, they have no idea... they've just assuming based on her dismissal and the way Jake and Chris acted. These women didn't know anything about this but now are acting like Rozlyn was getting her freak on and was being so deceitful. Ugh. I have no doubt that their outrage is for real because if Rozlyn was doing it with a producer behind everybody's backs, then that's a big deal. But they don't know that! It was news to them and the way it was presented to them is what is making them assume she was having sex with the producer.

Rozlyn did not deserve to be painted as some kind of Hester Prynn on "The Bachelor." Gross, show.

Rose Ceremony
Now that Rozlyn is gone, there are only two women going home tonight. My money's on Drunken Christina and Crazy Michelle. Let's see how I do.

Jake gives roses to Ali, Elizabeth (they already had them), Vienna, Gia, Tenley, Ella, Valishia, Corrie, Jessie, Ashleigh, Michelle (drats, I was wrong. But more crazy makes for better recaps, so that's okay) and... Kathryn. Which means Christina and Ashley are going home. Yeah, that's not a huge shocker. On Ashley's way out, she calls Rozlyn deceitful and classless. Uh, maybe the SHOW is classless. Christina cries a little, you can tell she's disappointed. Awww. Work on those self-esteem issues and you'll do alright, girlfriend.

Next week: Vienna is grating on the girls' nerves. Take a number, girls.

The scuttlebutt on Reality Steve is that Rozlyn wanted to leave the house because she was being denied phone access to her 7 year-old son and when she started making a fuss, the show wanted to get her out and exaggerated her friendship with a producer. I have no idea what truth there is to that, but you can read all about it at Reality Steve. The reason I didnt' link to that site is only because there are some MAJOR possible spoilers over there (including the alleged Final Four and alleged winner) and I don't want to inadvertently ruin it for someone. Proceed at your own risk.
I feel like Michelle, Jason Mesnick's Shannon and "More to Love's" Kristian should start a support group for unstable crazy girls.

Far from election to the Hall of Fame in four chances and about to re-enter baseball after a long absence, Mark McGwire on Monday admitted to using steroids.

McGwire -- who set a single-season record with 70 home runs in 1998, a feat that is credited with helping baseball rebound from the 1994 players' strike -- said he used steroids in the 1989-90 offseason, 1993 and "on occasion throughout the nineties, including during the 1998 season" in a statement released by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Part of the statement reads:

I'm sure people will wonder if I could have hit all those home runs had I never taken steroids. I had good years when I didn't take any and I had bad years when I didn't take any. I had good years when I took steroids and I had bad years when I took steroids. But no matter what, I shouldn't have done it and for that I'm truly sorry.

The team, for whom McGwire played in '98, had hired McGwire as hitting coach in October but had yet to face the media. His reputation took a major hit -- and the suspicion that he used steroids multiplied -- when in a 2005 hearing before a House of Representatives committee he declined to address the matter, saying only, "I'm not going to go into the past or talk about my past. I'm here to make a positive influence on this," and "My lawyers have advised me that I cannot answer these questions without jeopardizing my friends, my family and myself."

Now he has answered the questions.

McGwire followed up his statement and Associated Press interview by sitting down with Bob Costas of the MLB Network for nearly an hour on live television.

During that interview, McGwire argued that the substances he used did not enhance his performance, insisting that he used them only to stay healthy.

"I was given a gift to hit home runs," he said. "I believe I was given this gift. The only reason I took steroids was for health purposes.

"A pill or injection will not hit a baseball."

"I am pleased that Mark McGwire has confronted his use of performance-enhancing substances as a player," said commissioner Bud Selig in a statement. "This statement of contrition, I believe, will make Mark's reentry into the game much smoother and easier.

"The so-called Steroid Era -- a reference that is resented by the many players who played in that era and never touched the substances -- is clearly a thing of the past, and Mark's admission today is another step in the right direction."

McGwire ranks eighth all-time with 583 home runs, including 245 in a four-season span (1996-99). But in four appearances on the BBWAA Hall of Fame ballot, he has appeared on 23.5, 23.6, 21.9 and 23.7 percent of the ballots -- with 75 percent required for induction.

Much like Alex Rodriguez, who admitted to steroids use last year, McGwire blamed the culture of the time:

I wish I had never touched steroids. It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era.

The first public accusation of McGwire regarding steroids use came in 2005, by former Oakland "Bash Brothers" partner and admitted user Jose Canseco. In his book Juiced, Canseco said he personally injected McGwire "more times than I can remember."

In a phone interview with the AP, McGwire said he called commissioner Bud Selig and Cardinals manager Tony La Russa on Monday to personally apologize.

La Russa praised McGwire for his admission of guilt.

"No one on the teams I managed worked harder or better than Mark. And now, his willingness to admit mistakes, express his regret, and explain the circumstances that led him to use steroids add to my respect for him," the St. Louis manager said in a statement. "I've defended Mark because I observed him develop his unique power hitting skill through a rigorous physical and fundamental work out program."

Both team chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. and general manager John Mozeliak offered words of encouragement for their new hitting coach.

Mark is going to make an outstanding hitting coach," Mozeliak said. "He's a smart student of the game and he has a lot of valuable lessons he can teach our ballplayers. I'm glad Mark has gotten this off his chest and he can proudly begin the next chapter of his life."

"No one condones what Mark did more than 10 years ago," DeWitt said, "but we hired him as our hitting coach because we know there are many contributions that Mark can and will make to our team and to this game."

Now that I have become the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, I have the chance to do something that I wish I was able to do five years ago.

I never knew when, but I always knew this day would come. It's time for me to talk about the past and to confirm what people have suspected. I used steroids during my playing career and I apologize. During the mid-'90s, I went on the DL seven times and missed 228 games over five years. I experienced a lot of injuries, including a rib cage strain, a torn left heel muscle, a stress fracture of the left heel, and a torn right heel muscle. It was definitely a miserable bunch of years and I told myself that steroids could help me recover faster. I thought they would help me heal and prevent injuries too.

I'm sure people will wonder if I could have hit all those home runs had I never taken steroids. I had good years when I didn't take any and I had bad years when I didn't take any. I had good years when I took steroids and I had bad years when I took steroids. But no matter what, I shouldn't have done it and for that I'm truly sorry.

Baseball is really different now -- it's been cleaned up. The Commissioner and the Players Association implemented testing and they cracked down, and I'm glad they did.

I'm grateful to the Cardinals for bringing me back to baseball. I want to say thank you to Cardinals owner Mr. DeWitt, to my GM, John Mozeliak, and to my manager, Tony La Russa. I can't wait to put the uniform on again and to be back on the field in front of the great fans in Saint Louis. I've always appreciated their support and I intend to earn it again, this time as hitting coach. I'm going to pour myself into this job and do everything I can to help the Cardinals hitters become the best players for years to come.

After all this time, I want to come clean. I was not in a position to do that five years ago in my Congressional testimony, but now I feel an obligation to discuss this and to answer questions about it. I'll do that, and then I just want to help my team.

McGwire said that in addition to his family, he called commissioner Bud Selig and Cardinals manager Tony La Russa earlier in the day to personally apologize.

Wide spread protests all over the state by BJP activists erupted on Monday against former prime minister HD Deve Gowda’s abuses against chief minister BS Yeddyurappa.

Gowda’s effigies were burnt as BJP leaders demanded that he tender a written apology to the CM, and retire from politics to atone for his shameful outburst.

BJP MLAs in Bangalore, led by Jayanagar MLA MN Vijayakumar, staged a protest at Basaveshwara Circle, while protests in Mysore, near the court complex, turned violent when an advocate objected to it. The BJP activists attacked him and the police had to intervene to rescue the victim.

In Gowda’s backyard of Hassan district, tension prevailed in Arasikere town when JD(S) activists staged a counter protest against the BJP dharna. The situation threatened to turn into a group clash when a miscreant threw a slipper at BJP protesters.

Police immediately swung into action and dispersed the mob.

Protest marches and dharnas were held in Belgaum, Dharwad, Shimoga, Gulbarga and other districts. BJP legislator Prabhakar Kore, condemning Gowda’s diatribe against the CM, said, “Gowdashould be admitted to a mental hospital and banished from politics.”

Labour minister BN Bache Gowda was harsher in his attack against Gowda: “Gowda has lost his mental balance. He should take political sanyas. In the history of the state, no politician has used such derogatory words against a responsible CM. The statewide agitation against him will be intensified.”

Almost two years on, Katie Piper had dozens of operations – 32 on her throat alone. She still lives on a mostly liquid diet of protein shakes. But she is determined to be more than just the woman in a Perspex mask.
