NFL playoff wild-card schedule (with times, announcers)
Here are the first-round matchups for the NFL playoffs, finally confirmed by the NFL (which changed its original schedule of putting the early Sunday game on Fox):
Saturday, Jan. 9
4:30: N.Y. Jets (9-7) at Cincinnati (10-6), NBC (Tom Hammond, Joe Theismann, Joe Gibbs)
8:00: Philadelphia (11-5) at Dallas (11-5), NBC (Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth)
Sunday, Jan. 10
1:00: Baltimore (9-7) at New England (10-6), CBS (Jim Nantz, Phil Simms)
4:40: Green Bay (11-5) at Arizona (10-6), Fox (Joe Buck, Troy Aikman)
I can only imagine the behind-the-scenes negotiating that went on among the three networks and the NFL.
A schedule distributed a few days ago had the early Sunday game set for Fox, which would have been the game in Dallas since the league can’t start the game in Arizona at 11 a.m. local time. Fox even announced on its postgame show that the Eagles-Cowboys would be Sunday and called by Buck and Aikman.
Fox softened that stance late in its show, and the anchors on the NBC pregame show, which seemed to be the appropriate place to make such an announcement, said that the times had not been set.
I have trouble envisioning that the Jets-Bengals result tonight made a difference in the schedule, but the official announcement came late in the third quarter of tonight’s game, with the Jets comfortably ahead.
